Thane-based woman loses Rs 1 lakh in SIM card fraud fraud case. An online scam posing as a telecommunications officer phoned the victim and asked her to send us a PIN at their company's customer care number to link the phone number to the Aadhaar card. His SIM card was then stolen and money was taken from the victim's bank.

In a recent incident, a Thane-based woman lost Rs 1 lakh in a fraudulent SIM replacement case. An online scam posing as a telecommunications officer phoned the victim and asked her to send us a PIN at their company's customer care number to link the phone number to the Aadhaar card. His SIM card was then stolen and money was taken from the victim's bank.


The victim, Vaibhavi Attal, later went to Kasarvadavali police station in Thane, a genetic report said, adding that he had lodged a complaint with the complainant, claiming that he had received a call from a man claiming to be a communications company official. The victim was told that her phone number was not connected to Aadhaar, therefore, her number would be cut off, and to avoid having to send an 18-digit PIN to the customer care number.

 

Since the officer did not ask for Aadhaar's bank or credit card details, Vaibhavi Attal sent him an 18-digit PIN to customer care number. He told DNA, "After I sent the PIN message, my SIM card was cut off. I did not know anything. I then lodged a complaint with the communications company to open my card. Rs 1 lakh was deducted from my bank account. "


Police reportedly said the victim's phone number was linked to his bank account and the fraudster used his mobile phone number to retrieve a bank account. PIN was actually a new SIM PIN purchased by the fraudster; when shared with customer care, it allows SIM exchange. This led to the customer's SIM being blocked, and allowed him to control his phone number, the fraudster reportedly used the phone number to perform operations with the victim's bank account, using OTPs sent for verification.
